In an age of statewide crippling budget cuts to many extra curricular activities in Florida schools, Haley and Shelly Gerig answered with Sweet Treats for a Cause this past Saturday- an event that gave the community an opportunity to come together in a fun and fashionable way to support the financially ailing art programs.

The love of fashion and important causes gathered at Lake Receptions in Mount Dora for the First Annual Fashion Show Fundraiser, Dessert Bar and Shopping Experience known as “Sweet Treats for a Cause.”

Haley’s Vision

Co-creator Haley Gerig explained her personal inspiration for the event, “I wanted to do something for Lake County youth to give them a way to express themselves positively. As a graduate from Tavares (High School) and International Academy of Design & Technology as a Fashion Design and Merchandising major, I know not all kids are into sports, so giving them an opportunity to be involved in their passion made sense to me.”

Food, Fashion, and Fun

As the models prepared to walk the runway and bring Haley’s vision to reality, guests had the opportunity to satisfy their sweet tooth with cupcakes, brownies, and a dessert fountain provided by sponsors from throughout the community. Guests could then shop various fashion, jewelry, photography, and publishing vendors as youth performers from the Bay Street Young People’s Theater and Dance Depot Revolution Dancers took the stage.  At 2pm, adult and teen models graced the runway wearing fashions from Haley’s custom clothing line and neighborhood boutiques.

Fun into Funds

As the runway show came to a close, the Master of Ceremonies emphatically thanked all the donors and sponsors. The financial support generated from Haley’s vision will help benefit selected Lake County high school students who desire to participate in the arts (such as Band, Fine Art or Drama) but lack the funds due to financial hardship. The recipient, Safe Climate Coalition of Lake County, will distribute the scholarships to Lake County youth entering the 9th grade.

The afternoon can be summed up by a quote from Co-creator Shelly Gerig: “My passion is to find ways that our youth will grow in experiences that are fun and create good memories.”
