ORLANDO, Fla. (March 21st, 2013) Female business owners from throughout the Central Florida area gathered on Thursday evening at The National Entrepreneur Center in East Orlando for the Spring Wine, Women, and Chocolate Event. The event, hosted by the Orlando Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners, or NAWBO, welcomed both members and non-members as part of their annual membership drive, as well as to announce the return of its Business Plan Competition.
NAWBO is an organization that mentors and supports and nurtures businesses owned by women. According to the NAWBO Orlando website, it is the “one-stop resource to propel women business owners into greater economic, social and political spheres of power worldwide.” In 2011, NAWBO sponsored a Business Plan Competition to encourage female business owners to draft business plans in two categories- emerging business and existing business.
Out of all the businesses launched each year in our country, nearly half are launched by women. However, businesses started by men are three-and-a-half times more likely to reach $1 million in annual revenue, according to FOX Business. However, according to Lewis Humphries from INVESTOPEDIA.com female entrepreneurs are starting to surpass their counterparts. “While there are still many social obstacles that female entrepreneurs must overcome if they are to achieve parity with their male counterparts, recent developments suggest that they are at the beginning of an upward trend.”
In 2011, a winner from each category received a prize package with a value of over $20,000.00. The event is being re-launched this year. According to NAWBO President Pamela Rogan, “Our 2011 competition was a huge hit and since it was the first time, we wanted to ensure we focused on the following year where we provide the advisory panel, etc. to the winners. We anticipate making this an annual event moving forward now that we’ve run it completely through once.” Rogan encourages any female entrepreneur interested in participating in the competition to visit the FAQ page of the NAWBO website.
ACHIEVERS: For those who plan with audacity and execute with vigor, progress is the magnificent byproduct.
