EUSTIS, Fla. (July 13, 2013) Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter is gearing up for their 2nd Annual Veterans Housing Initiative Pro-Am Golf Tournament and Gala this November by issuing an invitation to the Lake-Sumter community and surrounding areas to join them in their efforts to raise awareness and funds to provide adequate housing for Veterans.
According to information gathered by Habitat for Humanity through its partnership with The VA, there are 23.4 million veterans in America and 1.7 million of them live in Florida with an estimated 45,118 veterans living in Lake and Sumter counties alone (county by county demographics, along with various other breakdowns can be found via va.gov). This equates to approximately 2.7% of Florida’s veteran population. While the number of returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans has not been fully determined, based on current census demographics, it is conservatively estimated that 2,800 will return to Lake & Sumter Counties.
After evaluating the numbers and the lack of substantial transitional housing facilities in the area, Habitat has pledged to bring safe and affordable housing to Lake and Sumter County Veterans through its Veteran’s Housing Initiative. According to CEO Kent Adcock, “At Habitat, we believe no veteran should have to face such worries after serving our country. Therefore, we have partnered with PGA Tour Players, LifeStream, and A Wing and A Prayer Foundation in an effort to host an event that we hope will garner both awareness and financial support for this worthwhile cause.”
The Celebration of Service Gala will be held on the evening of November 10th, 2013 from 5:30pm till 10pm at Mission Inn and Resort located in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida. The evening will feature keynote speaker Congressman Daniel Webster along with silent and live auctions, hors d’heovers, dinner, and dessert. The next morning- Veterans Day- PGA Tour Pros and registered members of the community will gather again at Mission Inn for the Pro-Am Golf Tournament. Currently 72 spots are open for amateur golfers who are interested in supporting Habitat’s Veterans Housing Initiative.
